The NWSL confirmed the addition of its first expansion with the announcement that MLS's Houston Dynamo has launched the Houston Dash, which will begin play
in the 2014 season. The Dash will be owned by the Dynamo ownership group and operated by the Dynamo, similar to the arrangement that has been so successful with Thorns FC in Portland.
Dynamo is operated by AEG in partnership with boxing champion Oscar De La Hoya
of Golden Boy Promotions and businessman Gabriel
and the Brener International Group. AEG had been the owner of the Los Angeles Sol of the WPS but folded the team after one season.
The Dash will play a 24-game schedule that
includes 12 home games at BBVA Compass Stadium, the home of the Dynamo that opened in 2012.
“We are thrilled to have our very own NWSL franchise here in Houston,” said Houston Dynamo president Chris
in a statement. “It is an important addition to our sports landscape and will bring added value to our community.”
