Clint Dempsey will make a two-month loan return to his former club Fulham when the European transfer window opens on Jan. 1, the Guardian reports, citing several U.S. sources. Dempsey’s return is seen as cover for the possibility that striker Dimitar Berbatov will seek a move away from Craven Cottage. The USA captain would stay until late February, making his return to MLS club Seattle Sounders in time for its March 8 season opener.
Dempsey left Fulham under acrimonious circumstances in the summer of 2012, when he made it clear that he no longer wanted to play for the club. He then moved to Tottenham for $9.7 million, only to leave the following summer for Seattle. In five-and-a-half seasons at Fulham, the American scored 50 Premier League goals.
