Scorpions land Barrera and Fana

[NASL 2014 COUNTDOWN] The San Antonio Scorpions, who finished last in the 2013 fall season, have signed midfielder Danny Barrera, who led the Atlanta Silverbacks to the spring championship, for the 2014 season. The Scorpions also picked up Dominican Republic international Jonathan Fana, who has most recently been playing with Alianza of the El Salvador first division.

The Colombian-born Barrera, who starred at UC Santa Barbara and moved to Atlanta from Cal FC in 2012, had four goals and seven assists in 2013.

“Danny is a creative attacking player with the ability to locate space behind the opposition’s back line and unlock defenses with a highly effective passing game,” said Scorpions coach Alen Marcina. “He’s a young talent coming off a great season in Atlanta who has already demonstrated a remarkable ability to create goal scoring opportunities.”

San Antonio also picked up Dominican Republic international Jonathan Fana, who has most recently been playing with Alianza of the El Salvador first division, scoring 13 goals since joining the club. He has made 25 appearances for the Dominican Republic, scoring 16 goals.

The Scorpions also re-signed Stephen DeRoux, who established himself as one of the best left backs in the NASL.

INDY SIGNS MENDES. The Indy Eleven, who will begin play in the NASL in 2014, signed four more players, including Brazilian-born forward Pedro Mendes, who led the Atlanta Silverbacks with eight goals in 2013. Indy also added midfielder/forward Don Smart and defenders Kyle Hyland and Chris Wey to give it eight players under contract.

OTTAWA LOADS UP. Former Spanish youth international Ramon Soria, who has been playing for Norwegian third division club Gjovik FF, is the fifth player to sign with expansion club Ottawa. Soria, who holds a master's in sports law, joins four other recent Fury signings: midfielder Richie Ryan (Ireland), midfielder Nicki Paterson (Scotland) and forwards Oliver Minatel (Brazil) and Carl Haworth (Canada).
