Bornstein leaves Tigres for Atlante

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Jonathan Bornstein, who has made just nine league appearances in three seasons -- and just two in the last two and a half years -- at Tigres, is finally leaving the Monterrey club, joining relegation-threatened Atlante for Mexico's 2014 Torneo Clausura.

Bornstein was one of three players headed to the Cancun club from Tigres. Only one team is relegated in Mexico each season, and it is based on the results of the last three seasons (six championships). On that basis, Atlante is currently in last place, trailing Atlas, which was recently sold, by 11 points.

Bornstein, a member of the 2010 U.S. World Cup team, played seven games in the 2011 Torneo Clausura and two games in the 2012 Torneo Clausura. But he not played a minute in the last two league championships. He has made occasional appearances for Tigres in the Copa MX and Concacaf Champions League.

He had been selected in the 2012 summer draft by Atlante but the move fell through.

Bornstein was the only American to change clubs during the Mexican winter transfer window that closed on Wednesday.
