Report: Messi Set for New Deal After Christmas

AS is reporting that Lionel Messi’s recent outburst against Barcelona VP Javier Faus has caused the Catalan giant’s President, Sandro Rosell, to set up a meeting with Team Messi after the winter break to finalize the terms of an improved deal. The 26-year-old’s current deal, which has a buyout clause of $342 million, runs through 2018 and reportedly pays the Argentina striker $17 million per season after tax.

Faus recently drew attention to continued rumors that Messi might seek an exit from the Camp Nou by stating that ‘there is no reason’ to improve his contract ‘every six months.’ Messi’s current deal was signed at the beginning of 2013. The player responded to Faus’ comments by criticizing him for being a businessman ‘who knows nothing about soccer.’
