[WORLD CUP 2014]
American Mark Geiger
was named one of 25 referees for the 2014 World Cup. His assistants will be Mark Hurd
and Canadian Joe Fletcher
, forming the same crew that did the 2011 Under-20 World Cup in Colombia, the match he
calls the highlight of his career. World Cup 2014: Referee
Geiger, who did 15 MLS games in 2013, also refereed at the 2012 Olympics and 2013 Club World Cup. The referees represent 25 different countries. Geiger's crew is one of six
representing two or more countries.
The other Concacaf referees are Salvadoran Joel Aguilar
and Mexican Marco
. They did the two controversial USA-Costa Rica Hexagonal games in 2013.
Aguilar did the game in the snow in Colorado that the Ticos insisted should not have been
played. Rodriguez did the return game in September in San Jose, where he gave Matt Besler
a yellow card that kept him out of the deciding USA-Mexico game four
days later, though replays showed Costa Rica Joel Campbell
faked being fouled.
FIFA selected 2010 World Cup final referee Howard
, who gave out 14 yellow cards and one red in the Spain-Netherlands overtime game.
