Harris Poll: Soccer lags among favorite sports

[MAKING A LIST] Men's soccer still lags far behind other American sports in a Harris Poll online survey of American adults, conducted in December. Just 2 percent said men's soccer was their favorite sport.

That put men's soccer tied with four other sports, behind pro football, the overwhelming favorite, and six other sports. In 2010, men's soccer was tied with men's college basketball for seventh place at 4 percent. It was also the favorite of 4 percent of Americans in 1998.

Men's soccer was actually more popular, according to the Harris Poll, in 1985, the first year of the sports survey (3 percent) than it was in 2013. Pro football has gone up 11 points, while baseball has gone down 9 points during the same period.

Women's soccer was one of three sports to register less than 1 percent in 2013. The only time it registered at least 1 percent was in 2004. (The poll was not conducted in 1999, the year of the Women's World Cup held in the United States.)

Harris Interactive surveyed 2,311 adults online Dec. 11-17.

I think this survey shows baseball has fallen off as the national pastime. Soccer doesn't seem to benefit during World Cup years. Are most World Cup fans of the bandwagon variety?
