Racing Santander's squad has announced that it will not play the second-leg of Thursday’s Copa del Rey tie at home to Real Sociedad unless the club's board, which includes president Angel
"Harry" Lavin, resigns in the next few hours. Captain
Mario Fernandez announced the decision in a statement read out on Monday morning at the club's training ground, adding he hoped
the club's fans would "understand and support" the move.
“If the board does not resign in the next few hours, the squad here announces its irrevocable refusal to compete in our next
game in the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey,” Fernandez said, reading out the statement that pointed out how the players have not been paid for several months, despite promises from the
president. The captain added that “the lack of payment and the broken promises has caused a difficult financial situation for a number of players,” which has in turn caused “requests
for contract resolutions.”
