The Copa Centroamericana -- the Central American tournament that qualifies five of seven Central American teams to the Gold Cup -- will be held in the
United States during FIFA's fixture window in September 2014.
Teams like El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras and to a lesser extent Costa Rica and Panama have strong followings in the
United States, as evidenced by strong support at the Gold Cup.
Possible host venues include Dallas, Los Angeles, Houston and Washington D.C.
The tournament has typically been
held in January of the same year as the Gold Cup. A September window would allow for the release of all national team players and decide the Central American entrants four months earlier.
Costa Rica won the 2013 tournament as the host country.
Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama and El Salvador are the dominant countries of Central America, though Belize beat out
Guatemala for a berth in the 2013 Gold Cup. Nicaragua qualified for the first and only time in 2009, also at Guatemala's expense.
