[AMERICANS ABROAD] It was a miserable weekend for Americans in Europe, where only nine of the 22 World Cup hopefuls played.
Of the nine, six lost and three tied.
The injury list grew as
Timmy Chandler had to be taken to the hospital with a knee injury (meniscus tear)
suffered in Nuremberg's Frankisch-Bayerisches derby with German champion Bayern Munich.
Players who did not dress included forwards
Clint Dempsey,
Aron Johannsson and
Terrence Boyd and midfielder
Alejandro Bedoya.
MEXICO. DaMarcus Beasley left Puebla's game against Guadalajara on his own power, limping off in the second half after being stomped on in the
1-0 loss to Chivas.
Saturday ... Timmy Chandler's season could be finished after he had to taken
to the hospital for a CAT early in Nuremberg's Fränkisch-Bayerisches derby with German champion Bayern Munich.
Nuremberg said Chandler was expected to be out 8-10 weeks. The injury,
which came in the 8th minute of his 100th Bundesliga, was a huge blow as he had been playing very well to
draw the attention of U.S. national team
Jurgen
Klinsmann, in whose doghouse he's been for much of the last year.
It was a rough day for Nuremberg, which lost young striker
David Ginczek for six weeks with a
knee injury (cruciate ligament). Both players were scheduled to have surgery Monday in Augsburg.
-- Also unable to play was
Oguchi Onyewu, who had
been making a late bid since his move to Sheffield Wednesday. Once again,
Sacha Kljestan did not get off the bench at Anderlecht, where he has made one league
appearance in the last two months.
Leading Scorers (2013-14): 21+1 Aron Johannsson (AZ)
12 Terrence Boyd (Rapid Vienna)
8 Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht)
(Goals in all club competitions.)
Friday ... German-American
Andrew Wooten scored on his first touch with his new club to give FSV
Frankfurt a 2-1 win at Bochum as the German Bundesliga 2 resumed Friday night after the winter break.
The goal was Wooten's 10th in the second division in 40
games.
