Sam leads Red Bulls past Philly

[MLS 2014 COUNTDOWN] Lloyd Sam, one of the role players who contributed to the New York Red Bulls' 2013 Supporters' Shield title campaign and is looking to start in 2014, had a goal and an assist on Thierry Henry's goal to lead the Red Bulls to a 2-1 win over Philadelphia Union at Jacksonville's EverBank Field.

Sam beat Zac MacMath for the opening goal in the eighth minute. Jack McInerney equalized off an indirect free kick in the penalty area in the 29th minute, but Sam fed Henry to put the Red Bulls ahead again.

Sam started on the right side in a midfield that also included Peguy Luyindula, Dax McCarty and Jonny Steele. The New York backline included newcomers Armando and Bobby Convey, playing at left back.

The Union debuted its new midfield with recent acquisitions Maurice Edu, Cristian Maidana and Vincent Nogueira all starting. Captain Brian Carroll was the holding midfielder, while Danny Cruz and Maidana started on the wings and McInerney played as the lone striker.

CHICAGO-D.C. UNITED. D.C. United is still struggling. Its 1-0 loss to Chicago on Wednesday morning was its third shutout defeat in three preseason games.

Benji Joya again showed why he is of the top prospects coming up from last year's U.S. U-20 World Cup team, winning the game with a curving shot in the 75th minute. The Fire finished its Florida leg of preseason with four wins in four games.

D.C. started its projected first team -- including seven first-year players -- while the Fire also fielded its starters, minus MLS MVP Mike Magee.

FC TUCSON-PORTLAND. Ben Zemanski's beauty of a free kick from more than 25 yards  gave the Portland Timbers a 1-0 win over the PDL's FC Tucson in their last game in Arizona.

-- The Houston Dynamo got two goals from Brad Davis and two assists from Kofi Sarkodie in its 6-0 win over Houston Baptist University.
