COLLEGE WOMEN: Peter Reynaud concludes career at Long Beach State

Peter Reynaud, who won 245 games in 22 seasons as an NCAA women's head soccer coach, announced his retirement Tuesday after three seasons at Long Beach State.

Reynaud won an NCAA Division II championship at Sonoma State and also was head coach at California and Fresno State before heading to Southern California in 2001.

''After 23 years, it is time for me to retire and let a young coach take over the program,'' Reynaud said in a statement. ''I am very pleased to leave the Long Beach State program in very good shape.''

Reynaud was 19-29-7 in three seasons in Long Beach, but the 49ers were 9-9-0 and competitive in a balanced Big West Conference last fall.

He coached 15 All-Americans and three U.S. women's national-teamers, started two programs, and reached the NCAA tournament seven times. His 1990 Sonoma State squad won the 1990 NCAA title, with a 15-4-0 record, and lost to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the 1991 final, when the Cossacks (now the Seawolves) were 17-2-2.

Reynaud began Sonoma State's program in 1981, led it for four seasons, then departed for Cal, where he was an assistant in 1985 and head coach in 1986. He returned to Sonoma State in 1987, served eight seasons, then started Fresno State's program in 1995.

His Cal team went 16-3-1 and reached the NCAA quarterfinals with a lineup featuring Brandi Chastain, Joy Fawcett (then Biefeld) and Mary Harvey.

In 13 seasons at Sonoma State, Reynaud was 147-57-15 -- 106-39-8, with five NCAA tournament appearances, during the second span.

He was 64-56-7 in six seasons at Fresno State, reaching the NCAA tournament in 1999, when the Bulldogs were 14-6-2. In nine seasons at the Division I level, Reynaud's teams were 99-88-15.

His career record is 245-145-30.

Long Beach State is the fifth of the eight Division I schools in the 23-campus California State University system to change women's soccer coaches this offseason.

Chuck Clegg retired at San Diego State, and Angela Morrison is heading the program as interim head coach. Stacy Welp resigned earlier this month at Fresno State. Dave Siracusa was hired at San Jose State at the close of last season.

And Long Beach State's Big West rival Cal State Northridge appointed men's head coach Terry Davila to also guide the women's team.
