Rooney Agrees New United Deal

Wayne Rooney on Friday agreed to a new five-and-a-half year deal with Manchester United, extending his current contract by four years, and increasing his weekly salary to 300,000 pounds ($500,000) per week, the BBC and other news outlets are reporting. The United striker has 11 goals and 14 assists in all competitions in the current season, and is just 42 goals shy of surpassing Bobby Charlton’s long-standing record for goals scored in a Man United shirt.

As recently as last summer, the 28-year-old England international looked set to leave the club after former boss Alex Ferguson claimed that he had asked for a transfer -- something that Rooney has strenuously denied. During the summer transfer window, rival Chelsea had more than one bid for the player rejected.

Though Rooney has won five Premier League titles as well as the UEFA Champions League with United, it seems likely that next season will be his first without playing in the UEFA Champions League, as the Red Devils are currently 11 points outside of the fourth and final UCL spot in the Premier League table. Should the club fail to finish in the top four, it could still qualify for next season’s tournament by winning the competition this season.
