"Fabian Johnson is a very interesting player who can play attacking or defensive roles on either flank," Gladbach director of sport Max Eberl said. "He comes on a free transfer and we're delighted he's opted to join us."

A free agent like Johnson is free to talk with another club six months before the end of his current contract.

ELIASON LANDS IN ICELAND. Former Northwestern star Matt Eliason, known as the "bicycle kick" guy for the highlight-reel goal he scored as a last-minute fill-in in last summer's Messi & Friends exhibition match, has signed with Throttur FC of Iceland's 1. deild karla (second division).

“His attitude and approach to the trial displayed his ambition and determination to succeed, “ Throttur head coach Gregg Ryder said said after a tryout during which Eliason scored a goal. “The main things, which prompted us to sign Matt, are his eye for goal and movement. He is a natural finisher; his first thought is always, ‘Where is the goal?’ I expect big things from Matt. I am very confident, as is he, that he will score goals and contribute to the team’s success.”

Eliason, a former recruited walk-on, is still Northwestern’s all-time leading scorer with 33 goals, along with 82 career points.
