Fergie Wanted $250 Million for Ronaldo

Former Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson has admitted that he was disappointed to receive just 80 million pounds ($133.7 million) for the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009. In an interview with Spanish daily AS, the Scot said he believes that Los Blancos would have happily paid 150 million pounds ($250.6 million) for the Portugal international.

"I told [former United CEO] David Gill to ask for 150 million pounds. [Real President Florentino] Perez would have paid,” Ferguson said when asked if he had any regrets about selling Ronaldo. "The only thing that hurt me, and I said this repeatedly to David Gill, was that we didn't demand enough. I told David, 'Ask for 150 million. He said, 'Don't be silly. They'll never pay 150. I said, 'Ask for it because he's worth it'.”

The former United boss added: "Considering the fact that they signed Gareth Bale for £85m, I think he would have agreed to pay between 80 million and 150 million. I'm sure he would have because Perez knew perfectly the quality of player he was receiving, as shown by his time at United. Furthermore he was only 23. That is the only disappointing aspect."
