[AMERICANS ABROAD] Timmy Chandler
, once Steve Cherundolo
's heir apparent at right
back for the U.S. national team, will be sidelined for the rest of the 2013-14 Bundesliga season while recovering from a knee injury suffered in Nuremberg's game against Bayern Munich in February.
The 23-year-old Chandler had faded from the national team picture after starting in the 2013 Hexagonal opener against Honduras, but a strong winter with Nuremberg had even drawn praise from
U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann
Chandler made his U.S. debut in March 2011 for Bob Bradley
but did not play an official match for the USA until the Honduras game in which he played very poorly.
He sat out summer play with the USA in 2011 and 2012 and
was injured last summer, limiting his time with the USA. He played eight games for the USA in 2011 but only one each in 2012 and 2013.
He was expected to be sidelined with his knee injury
until April but Nuremberg coach Gertjan Verbeek
said Wednesday he would not return this season.
