Tijuana takes lead in series with Cruz Azul

[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Tijuana, which started Americans Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo, beat Mexican rival, the current leader of the Liga MX's Torneo Clausura, 1-0, at the Estadio Caliente in the first leg of their Concacaf Champions League series.

Cristian Pellerano scored the lone goal for Xolos from the penalty spot in the 79th minute after a foul on Dario Benedetto in the area. They had never beaten Cruz Azul before. Corona came off in the second half, while Castillo played the entire match. U.S. striker Herculez Gomez came on as a late sub.

Toluca moved closer to the final with a 1-0 win at Costa Rica's Alajuelense in the other semifinal. A header from Paraguayan defender Paulo da Silva off a corner kick in the 72nd minute gave the Rojos Diablos the win. Alajuela's best chance went to waste as Jonathan McDonald missed a penalty kick in the 66th minute.



The return legs will be played next Tuesday (Toluca-Alajuelense) and Wednesday (Cruz Azul-Tijuana).
