Could Destro Hat Trick Lead to Italy Call-Up?

AS Roma on Sunday cut Juventus’ lead at the top of Serie A to just five points, after a Mattia Destro hat trick powered the Giallorossi to a 3-1 win over Cagliari. The treble moved Destro, who was sidelined for almost nine months last year due to a knee injury, onto 13 goals for the season, while increasing calls for the 23-year-old to be included in Italy coach Cesare Prandelli’s World Cup squad.

After the game, Coach Rudi Garcia hailed Destro’s impact on Roma since his return from injury in the fall. “Today he proved that he is not only a box striker, but a complete forward and he understood you have to give your all in every second of every game,” the Frenchman said. “It’s true that when Francesco Totti isn’t playing, Destro is a very useful center forward. Playing with the others he can only improve, but even when he plays out wide – even with freedom of movement – he can spread his influence in different areas.”

When asked about his World Cup chances, the youngster shrugged. “I do my work every Sunday and try to help Roma as best I can. That is all I can do.” He went on to thank Garcia for showing faith in him. “I think everyone knows I didn’t have an easy situation with such a long injury. The fact this new Coach arrived and still kept me in consideration even when I was not available for training or playing, it gave me a lot of confidence. I thank him for that.”
