The good news for Jozy Altidore
was he wasn't part of Sunderland's 5-1 loss at Tottenham on Monday that
left the Black Cats in last place in the English Premier League. The bad news was that he was back at the Stadium of Light, confined to playing for Sunderland's U-21s in a match against Spurs' reserve
Altidore had no better luck with the U-21s than he has had with the first team, going scoreless in what was an easy 3-0 win for Sunderland. The U.S. international has scored one
goal in 27 EPL games and one goal in eight cup matches this season.
In March, Altidore had been dropped from the Sunderland 18-player squad for the Capital One Cup final at Wembley
against Manchester City. His manager, Gus Poyet
, hoped to see a different Altidore after missing out on the Wembley final.
"Let's see how he
reacts," said Poyet. "I look forward to seeing what type of character he is. I'd like him to prove me wrong. I'm not a charity, it's up to him. With me, if you play well, you stay in the team. You can
see he's got plenty of things to give, but it's about the consistency and doing it all the time. To survive in the league you need a striker who will score double figures, if you don't you will
struggle badly. It's different football to Holland."
Altidore set an American record with 31 goals for Dutch club AZ before his move to Sunderland, but he now has three goals in 65 games
with English clubs. He had a season-long loan spell at Hull City in 2009-10.
