Great goal and this video illustrates the great feature of the golden goal: A team scores and they win. No need to play anymore as the tie was broken. If they had to play full OTs, the other team could have scored and the game could have been decided by the lottery of kicks from the mark rather than this great goal. Bring back the golden goal for FIFA competitions!
And while we're on the subject: How about completely dropping the term, "Sudden Death" to define the OT game winning goal? Sudden Victory is the more positive terminology. Especially in light of the rash of school crimes
I agree with Barry. I thought that Sudden Death and Group of Death would leave our terminology after 9/11 but it did not. Sudden Victory if a person does not want to say Golden Goal. Either way, bring it back!
A better solution for a tie-breaker is allowing each team to make a new lineup for overtime and allow three subs.

Randy, spoken like a true referee (:-). No good ever comes out of overtime, so the quicker it can be completed, the better (and Golden Goal is certainly more decisive and encourages teams to attack all out as quickly as possible). Unless a victor is necessary to advance, games tied after regulation should remain tied (without overtime). Sometimes teams are evenly matched, so a tie is deserved. If you need overtime, then I w's suggestion for allowing a complete roster change (as if a new game were beginning) and three new subs is appropriate (though game day roster limitations would limit this somewhat). Finally, if "kicks from the mark" are needed to determine a winner, the "mark" should be either the top of the 18 yd box, or the top of the circle (22 yds), rather than the penalty spot. This would do two things; first, it would correct the impression that these are penalty kicks (minor point). More importantly, it would require a good shot to score; most shots would be saved. So instead of a game being decided by someone who misses a shot he should have scored (or a keeper getting lucky and guessing the right way), it would be decided by a player making a shot most didn't. In other words, there would be a hero winning a game with a great shot, rather than a goat losing a game because he missed (or the keeper got lucky). It is a tragedy when a player plays superbly for 120 minutes, and then loses the game for his team because he didn't score from the mark.
