Real Salt Lake falls in shootout final to Stoke City

[GENERATION ADIDAS CUP] For the second time in a week, Real Salt Lake and Stoke City needed a shootout to break their stalemate, but this time the Potters edged Real Salt Lake 3-2 on penalty kicks to get revenge for their earlier loss and capture the 2014 Generation adidas Cup in Frisco, Texas. The final of the tournament for U-17 teams ended in a 1-1 tie during which Sebastien Saucedo scored his fifth goal of the tournament for RSL.

After a 2-2 first-round tie, Real Salt Lake edged Stoke in a shootout en route to its group title, while Stoke City advanced to the semifinals as runner-up with the best record.

Saucedo scored on a free kick in the 26th minute to put RSL ahead, but Belgian star Julien Ngoy replied for Stoke nine minutes after intermission in the 70-minute match.

The shootout final was the third involving RSL. It won in 2008 and lost two years later via penalty kicks.

Bernie Zuazua scored to give host FC Dallas a 1-0 win over Flamengo of Brazil in the third-place game.
