Cal fills hole at center back with U-20 Haberkorn

[COLLEGE MEN] California, whose 2013 center backs Steven Birnbaum and Christian Dean went 2-3 in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft, has added U.S. under-20 national team center back Trevor Haberkorn, who is transferring from Furman.

The 6-foot-3 Haberkorn joins Cal after appearing in all 18 games last year for the Paladins as a true freshman at centerback and helping guide them to an 11-5-2 record.

"Trevor is a tremendous signing for our program,” Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. “He has been involved with our U.S. national youth team program for several years. Trevor has all of the skill and ability to follow in the footsteps of the many great Cal central defenders who have gone on to be drafted and play in Major League Soccer and Europe. His impact on our team will be significant and our coaching staff is really looking forward to further developing his game."

Haberkorn spent last week with the U.S. U-20s, who finished second in the Gordon Jago Super Group at the Dr Pepper Dallas Cup.

He joins eight other new Bears this fall: forward Paul Salcedo, midfielder/forward Eloi Vasquez, midfielders Marko Helfrich and Aravind Sivakumar, defenders Matt Locklear, Jorge Miranda, Joshua Morton and Ugo Rebecchini, an Italian who plays for Bologna's primavera team. All the other new members of the program are California natives.
