Ottawa holds Eddies to scoreless draw in first meeting

[AMWAY CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP] NASL clubs FC Edmonton and Ottawa opened the 2014 Amway Canadian Championship with a 0-0 tie on Wednesday night in their first-ever meeting in the first leg of the preliminary round.

Ottawa goalkeeper Devala Gorrick preserved the draw when he stopped Sadi Jalali on a breakaway in stoppage time.

The Fury, which is playing its first season in the NASL, was missing former MLS players Tom Heinemann and Sinisa Ubiparipovic.

The two teams, who compete in the North American Soccer League, will meet next Wednesday in Edmonton for the final game of the home-and-home series.

The winner will join the three Canadian MLS clubs -- Montreal, Toronto FC and Vancouver -- in the semifinals. The Canadian champion qualifies for the 2014-15 Concacaf Champions League.
