[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Like Real Madrid on Tuesday, Atletico Madrid won big on the road to set up the first UEFA Champions League final involving two clubs from
the same city. Atletico came back from a goal down to blitz Chelsea, 3-1, and win their semifinal series by the same score on aggregate.
Adrian
Lopez,
Diego Costa (after being cautioned for time-wasting on his penalty kick) and
Arda Turan scored to send
Atletico into the final of Europe's top competition for the first time since 1974 when it lost to Bayern Munich, 4-0, in a replay of their European Cup final. Former Atletico striker
Fernando Torres had given Chelsea in the lead in the 36th minute.
Atletico got a big game from young Belgian goalie
Thibaut Courtois, who is on loan from Chelsea.
"The truth is the team was brilliant," Costa said on Spanish television broadcaster Canal Plus. "We have done everything
possible to get to the final. Both Real Madrid and us are deserved finalists."
Atletico and Real will meet in the final May 24 in Lisbon. On four other occasions since 2000, two teams
from the same country have met in the final. The only other all-Spanish final was Real Madrid-Valencia in 2000. Teams from England, Germany and Italy have also faced off in the final.
Atlético did what needed to be done and deserve to be in the final with Real Madrid. How many times have the two finalists in CL come from the same city?
My complaint about the game had nothing to do with the game per se but how it was made available to me in San Jose,CA. I don't know who gets the blame but the match should have aired here at11:30 AM but it was not available until 2:00PM. It was not in HD which meant that approximately 25% of the pitch on the video was not there. I could not even see the clock as the time was progressing. The same thing happened yesterday with the first semi-final match. Perhaps the fault lies with Fox Sports which I suspect was the case, I usually set these matches to record on my DVR a day or so in advance so I can relax and watch it when it is convenient for me but not this time.
Another culprit could be DirecTV but trying to get though to their customer service means setting yourself up for a lengthy wade through the maze of their distortions to even talk to a human being.
Am I the only one with this problem?
Superb technique and tactics by Atletico Madrid and Diego Simeone, especially during the second half. It was magnificent. The game has been taken to a whole new level. Welcome to the future.
