The United States will host a special edition of the Copa America in 2016 to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The South American championship
will move north for a tournament to be held June 3-26, 2016. There are no plans at this point for a second edition of the Copa Centenario though Conmebol president Eugenio Figueredo
added it won't be another 100 years before a combined championship is held again.
The 10 members of Conmebol will be joined by the host USA, Mexico and
four other Concacaf teams.
The Concacaf teams will include the winners of the 2014 Caribbean Cup and Central American Cup, both scheduled to be held in the fall of 2014. A playoff
doubleheader involving the next four Concacaf teams that finish the highest at the 2015 Gold Cup -- seeds No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 and No. 3 -- will determine the other two finalists.
venues for the tournament were named, but stadiums mentioned as possible cities have included the Rose Bowl (Pasadena, Calif.), Stanford Stadium (Palo Alto, Calif.), MetLife Stadium (East Rutherford,
N.J.), Florida Citrus Bowl (Orlando, Fla.), RFK Stadium (Washington, D.C.) and Reliant Stadium (Houston).
Figueredo said the Copa Centenario would be part of the 2016 FIFA international
calendar, allowing teams to field their full squads. The only 2016 FIFA fixture dates in the period for the tournament currently on the FIFA calendar are May 30-June 7. The dates for Euro 2016 in
France are June 10-July 10.
That corresponding dates in 2012 were used for Concacaf teams to play the first two games of the semifinal round of World Cup qualifying and for South American
teams to play matchdays 5 and 6 of their marathon qualifying tournament. Teams will have to also consider what kind of squad to send to the Copa Centenario if they have qualified for the 2016 Olympics
later in the summer in Brazil, where under-23 players plus three wild-card players are used.
The next edition of the Copa America is set to be played in Chile in 2015. Concacaf has not
yet announced the site of the 2015 Gold Cup. The Gold Cup is played every two years, while the the frequency of the Copa America and intervals between tournaments have changed through the years. The
last two finals were held in 2007 and 2011.
The commercial rights to the Centenario are held by wematch, a recently announced partnership among three agencies, Full Play, Torneos and
