Conte: 'The Team that Least Deserved it Went Through'

Juventus will play no part in the Europa League final on May 14 despite being its host, after Antonio Conte’s men were dumped out of the competition at the semifinal stage by Benfica, which battled to a 0-0 draw at the Juventus Stadium in Turin on Thursday, which was just good enough to progress after the Portuguese champ had won the first-leg 2-1 in Lisbon.

After the game, Juve coach Antonio Conte was in defiant mood. The former Bianconeri midfielder insisted that the best team had not won, while complaining bitterly about referee Mark Clattenburg and Benfica’s time-wasting tactics. “The team that least deserved it went through,” Conte told Sky Sport Italia. “It’s a shame, as these games are right on the limit, Benfica obstructed us at every turn and the referee allowed them to do it. He gave six minutes of stoppages when we were already three in without playing, so it took us for a ride,” he said, before adding: “It’s a shame, as with two shots on target over two legs Benfica went through. Over the two games Juventus certainly deserved to go through.”

The Europa League final will be at the Juventus Stadium on May 14 between Sevilla and Benfica.
