Pellegrini 'Expects' EPL Title

Manchester City coach Manuel Pellegrini said he expects to win the Premier League after his team went top of the English Premier League with a 4-0 win over Aston Villa at the Etihad Arena on Wednesday. City now leads second-place Liverpool by two points heading into the last game of the season, and its goal differential of 13 means that a draw would likely be good enough for Pellegrini’s men to lift the trophy on Sunday.

"Of course I expect to win the title because now we are top of the table," the Chilean said following Wednesday’s home win. "It is the last game. Win the next game and we can win the title." He pointed out that before going top on Wednesday, City had led the Premier League standings for just 11 in total this season. "It is a strange season, maybe, because we were never top of the table," he said. "Everyone said we were favorites but we were nine points behind Liverpool and eight points behind Chelsea. We had three games in hand but we must win all those games. Now we are top and I hope we are not going to lose next Sunday. But we must win the way we did today.

Pellegrini added—in a thinly veiled swipe at Chelsea’s defensive-minded coach Jose Mourinho -- that it was equally important how City wins the title. "We have a style of play. I think we are an attractive team, we score many goals and we are always thinking to score more goals. That to me has the same importance as winning the title. The way we play the whole season, I hope we will play the next game the same way. I am very happy to manage this team this way…There are different ways to win titles, I choose this one with attractive football, that the fans enjoy the season. Maybe you can win titles other ways. For me, the aesthetic part is very important.”
