Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has called on his teammates to seize their opportunity to win La Liga after Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw against Real Valladolid on Wednesday handed the reigning Spanish champ the initiative with two league games to play. Barca still trails leader Atletico by three points, but the Camp Nou meeting with Diego Simeone’s men on May 17 means that should it win away to Elche this weekend and then at home to Atleti a week later, Barca would once again be crowned La Liga champion.
“Now we are in a better position compared to in previous weeks,” Messi said. “You can see that now we have a chance in the League, and it is up to us. We must take advantage of this moment and not allow it to get away from us.”
The Argentine was also asked about reports in the Spanish press that Barca was prepared to sell him and that some of his teammates have been unhappy with his work ethic. "Lots of things have been said about me during the course of the year,” he replied. “Lots of nonsense has been said and virtually all of it is lies. I am fine."
