For the second weekend in a row, the top three teams in La Liga dropped points. Leader Atletico Madrid drew 1-1 against Malaga, while second-place Barcelona drew 0-0 at Elche. Real Madrid, which was missing start duo Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to injuries, dropped out of the title race altogether with a 2-0 loss at Celta Vigo.
Next Sunday, Barca hosts Atletico Madrid on the final day of the season in a game that will decide the La Liga championship. Though Atleti heads into Sunday’s clash at the Camp Nou with a three-point advantage, Barca would still be crowned champion with a win, because the first game between the sides ended in a 0-0 draw and in Spain the first tiebreaker is head-to-head rather than goal difference.
After Sunday’s home draw with Malaga, Atletico coach Diego Simeone was asked whether the pressure had gotten the best of his team. "It is quite normal to feel, as the games were played at the same time, and the team behind you didn't win, as though you have not won either the match nor the championship itself", the Argentine said.
He added: "We shall face the last game of the season in a location, the Camp Nou, where no one thought we would be going with a three-point lead over Barcelona. No one believed that. And no one is going to believe that we have any chance of winning. It is a kind of final, and where there is a final there is a 50 percent chance for both sides".
