Messi Reflects on Barca's 'Very Strange' Season

Barcelona striker Lionel Messi said that even though his team can win La Liga by beating Atletico Madrid on Saturday, it might not save what has been a disappointing season for the Blaugrana. Gerardo Martino’s men began April with a chance to win three trophies, but a terrible few weeks saw them lose the Copa del Rey final to Real Madrid, then fall in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal to Atletico Madrid. The club’s form in the league has been volatile ever since, but then again, so has that of fellow title challengers Real and Atleti.

In an interview with AS, Messi said that he will have mixed feelings about this season no matter what happens in Saturday’s finale. "La Liga is very important for all that it means, for the work of a whole year which was complicated, difficult," the Argentina international said. "We have come through difficult circumstances year after year and we have been able to overcome them. To end up winning La Liga would be good. I do not know if it would save the year, but it would be a very important trophy.”

He added: "[The season has been] very strange. The three teams at the top have committed a lot of mistakes and not won games we should have won to take the title. We have the fortune now to depend on ourselves."

The four-time Ballon d’Or winner said Barca would dedicate the title win to former coach Tito Vilanova, who died after a long battle with cancer in April. "We want to win this Liga, after everything that has happened, and to be able to dedicate it to Tito," he said. "For sure he would have wanted it as he loved this club so much and was such a huge supporter."
