Carles Puyol on Thursday seemed to announce his retirement from the game after a 19-year career playing at the heart of Barcelona’s defense. The 36-year-old, who has made 593 appearances for the Blaugrana, won an astonishing 21 titles in his time with the club, including six league titles, 3 UEFA Champions League titles and 2 Spanish Cup titles. He also won the 2008 European Championship and 2010 World Cup with Spain.

Speaking at a press conference accompanied by his teammates, ex-teammates, ex-coaches, and presidents, Puyol said that his ongoing knee problem has kept him from being able to play this season. He doesn't know what his plans are for the future. "I want to sort my knee problem out, and then we'll see. In the coming weeks I have a lot of things to consider; and any decision is not just mine alone, but also involves my partner. The club has spoken to me but I can't say any more", he said.

Puyol was quite moved during the tribute paid to him by Barça. "My life has been what millions of kids dream about, I have been very privileged, because for the last 19 years I've got up in the morning and gone off to do what I liked best", he said.
