Simeone Hails 'Amazing' Atleti, Martino Steps Down at Barca

Atletico Madrid was crowned La Liga champion on Saturday after its 1-1 draw at FC Barcelona left the Rojiblancos three points ahead of both its host, which finished in second, and Real Madrid,which finished in third. During the game, Barca opened the scoring thanks to an unstoppable blast from Alexis Sanchez late in the first half, only for a Diego Godinheader from a corner to level the score right after the break. Atletico then held on to lift its first La Liga title since 1996.

“It’s amazing. You can’t explain it. Thanksto the players,” Atletl coach Diego Simeone told reporters after the game. “We’ve never stopped working and that’s why we’re here.” The Argentinewent on to describe it as “one of the best days in the history of Atleti.”

Meanwhile, Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino has confirmedthat he will leave the Catalan giant by mutual consent after his team surrendered its title. Martino replaced the late Tito Vilanova at the Camp Nou last summer, but he only managed to win one trophy,the Spanish Super Cup, at the beginning of the season.

“In agreement with the club I am no longer the coach,” the Argentine said. “I deeply regret not having achieved the goals that this clubhas always been set and achieved. These are great players. My greatest gratitude goes to the players. They have made me proud.”
