Serie A is tops for changing coaches

With 15 managerial sackings, Serie A led the major European leagues in coaching changes this past season. This was a fairly typical number for Italy’s top league, one of the most volatile in the world when it comes to hirings and firings. There were 13 changes last season and 19 in 2011-12.

Relative stability reigned in France, where the five changes in Ligue 1 came very close to the league’s annual average of 4.4 in the past five seasons. In Germany, eight Bundesliga head coaches got the sack, with three teams each making two changes: Stuttgart (Thomas Schneider for Bruno Labbadia, then Huub Stevens), Hamburg (Bert van Marwijk for Thorsten Fink, then Mirko Slomka) and Nuremberg (Gertjan Verbeek for Michael Wiesinger, then Roger Prinzen).

Only the English Premier League came close to the sack pace in Italy, with 10 clubs changing managers. In Spain, La Liga overhauls went down from last season's eight changes to five this year. Five Eredivisie coaches were sacked -- compared to only two last season -- and in Portugal the total of eight surpassed by one the seven dismissed in 2012-13.
