's 2013 interview with Matthew Futterman
of the Wall Street Journal tells a lot about he felt about Landon Donovan
throughout his tenure as U.S. national team coach.
In January 2013, right after Donovan said he needed time off and before the start of
the Hexagonal, Klinsmann said: "Landon wanted his time off. He made certain decisions throughout the last couple of years that are his decisions. I watch that. I evaluate that. I could have evaluated
him a few times when he was with us, not that many times, but a few times. I will make the call at the end of the day if he fits into my plans or not."
When Klinsmann talks about "certain
decisions" that were "his decisions," he clearly means he was not happy with more than just Donovan's decision to go on sabbatical after the 2012 MLS season.
