FUTSAL: U.S. pulls away from Guyana in second half

Todd Dusosky and Pat White scored two second-half goals apiece and the U.S. national futsal team gave a brilliant defensive performance in a 6-0 romp Monday over Guyana at the CONCACAF Futsal Qualifying Tournament in Heredia, Costa Rica.

Dusosky scored in the 22nd and 24th minutes, the second on an assist by White, and White tallied in the 28th and 36th minutes as the Americans (1-0-1) scored five second-half goals to grab sole possession of second place in Group B.

They'll meet Cuba (2-0-0), a 2-0 winner over Panama (0-1-1) on Monday, in Wednesday's first-round finale, with the top two teams in the group advancing to the semifinals. Friday's semifinal winners qualify for the FIFA World Futsal Championship to be played Nov. 21-Dec. 5 in Chinese Taipei.

Cuba has beaten the Americans in two of three meetings since 1996. The Cubans' semifinal victory in the 2000 CONCACAF qualifiers prevented the United States from qualifying for the last Futsal World Championship.

Joel Shanker broke a scoreless tie in the 20th minute, just before halftime, and Andy Guastaferro converted a 29th-minute penalty kick.

''The difference between tonight's game and last game is two things,'' said U.S. coach Keith Tozer, whose squad tied Panama, 2-2, in its tournament opener Saturday. ''Some of the things that we worked on in the last two days really came out in this game, and we finished our chances. Versus Panama we were just not able to finish them, and tonight we were.''

Goalkeeper Brett Phillips made eight saves for his first international shutout. The defense was led by captain Sean Bowers.

Costa Rica (2-0-0) and Mexico (2-0-0) have qualified for the semifinals out of Group A; they meet on Tuesday.

Futsal is a cousin of North American indoor soccer, featuring five-player teams on a basketball-like court with no walls and a low-bouncing ball. Indoor soccer features six-player teams and side- and backwalls on a hockey rink-sized field.
