Hamburg and Netherlands midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has been ruled out the World Cup after picking up a calf injury in training on Tuesday. The 31-year-old has 109 international caps and appeared at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, and was in contention to make coach Louis van Gaal’s 23-man squad, which is due to be named on Saturday. The Netherlands has already lost two key players to injury, AS Roma midfielder Kevin Strootman and Paris Saint-Germain defender Gregory van der Wiel.
