Atletico: We Don't Need to Sell Our Best Players

Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has responded to rumors that his club will be forced to sell its best players this summer by denying that the club needs to sell its top players to balance its books. He added that if any Atleti player wants to leave it would be against the club’s wishes.

“Our organization doesn’t need to sell any member of the first team to balance the books,” Gil Marin told the club’s official website. “We understand the interest in our players from other clubs. It’s normal that the season they have had doesn’t go unnoticed by the most powerful clubs in the world.

“We further understand that the players who have been instrumental in this great campaign want to improve and we are willing to improve [their contract] within the possibilities of the club. But for those who do not wish to stay with us, we refer you to the termination clause. We don’t want or need to sell any important player in our workforce. Whoever wants to leave must do so against the wishes of Atletico.”

Gil Marin went on to say that Atleti is in position to renew the contracts of its most important players, as well as to make key additions to the squad as well. While the Spanish press expects the likes of Diego Costa, Arda Turan, Koke and Miranda to depart, one player said to be close to completing a switch to the Vicente Calderon is Sevilla and Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic.
