Steven Gerrard has hit back at former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes’ recent assessment that United and England striker Wayne Rooeny could be past his peak. Gerrard, the current Liverpool and England captain, said: "I think Paul Scholes was wrong. Wayne has been Manchester United's best player throughout the season, both at home and in Europe." He added: "He's been in terrific form. I can only judge from my opinion but from what I've seen of his performances in the United team and his form has been really positive.” Rooney, 28, has yet to score in eight World Cup appearances.
