Gerrard: England Practicing Penalties 'A Lot'

Steven Gerrard says the England squad has been practicing penalties “a lot” ahead of the World Cup. Roy Hodgson’s men head to Brazil knowing that England has the worst penalty shootout record in tournament history, with three defeats out of three. In fact, England has been dumped out of six of its last 10 major tournaments on penalties, including the Euro 2012 quarterfinal against Italy.

"I understand the fixation because we've failed in a few," Gerrard said. "But don't get carried away with it because it might never come about. Hopefully we perform well enough in 90 minutes or 120 minutes to prevent it going to a shootout, but we will be ready if it comes around.

The England and Liverpool captain added: "We are going to practice penalties a lot, but it is a difficult situation to put into words. A penalty shootout is a more pressurized situation than any one penalty in a league game. You have an awful lot more time to think about your penalty and what is at stake is a lot bigger."
