Cosmos settle for second in spring championship

[NASL: Week 9] The New York Cosmos beat the Ottawa Fury, 1-0, to finish their first NASL spring season with a 6-2-1 record and only three goals allowed in nine games but they had to settle for second place, one point behind Minnesota United FC, which captured the spring season title on Saturday night.

The Loons clinched with a 3-3 tie at the Tampa Bay Rowdies, finishing atop of the spring season standings with a 6-1-2 record for 20 points.

On the day the late Giorgio Chinaglia’s No. 9 jersey was retired, an Italian -- Alessandro Noselli -- scored the winning goal for the Cosmos, who are 15-3-5 in two half-seasons in the NASL.

-- FC Edmonton exploded for four goals in the first half en route to a 6-1 win over  the Carolina RailHawks in Sunday's other game. It got a hat trick from Daryl Fordyce hat trick along with goals from Tomi Ameobi, Lance Laing and Sadi Jalali. Fordye's hat trick tied him for the spring scoring title with three other players, all with five goals.

Minnesota will be joined by the fall winner along with the next two clubs with the best overall records from both seasons combined in the playoffs. The NASL now breaks for the World Cup, resuming July 12, the day before the final.
