Mario Mandzukic on Monday confirmed that he is seeking an exit from Bayern Munich this summer because his style of play does not fit with Coach Pep Guardiola’s tactics. Despite finishing second in the Bundesliga’s scoring charts with 18 goals last season, Mandzukic endured a frustrating season with Bayern, and was ultimately not even included in Guardiola’s squad for the German Cup final win against Borussia Dortmund.
The Croatia international on Monday told the Croatian press that he asked to leave the club on May 8, prior to the German Cup final. He also revealed that Bayern offered him a new contract, but he declined to sign, saying that Guardiola’s style does not suit him. "To be honest, the style of play Bayern are playing under Pep Guardiola does not fit me," Mandzukic said. "Following our first leg at Real, I ultimately realized that, no matter how hard I try, this style of soccer will not allow me to play at my best."
While Bayern has already lined up former Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski to lead the forward line next season, Mandzukic declined to reveal his potential destination this summer, saying he prefers to concentrate on the World Cup before deciding his future.
