Santa Clara University has received a $7.7 million gift from alumna and trustee, Mary Stevens
, and her
, a prominent venture capitalist, that will be used to build a new state-of-the-art soccer training center and to upgrade the current soccer
stadium, Buck Shaw Stadium.
Santa Clara termed the gift "the first step in a significant recommitment of University resources, time, and talent to create a more nationally prominent
athletics program at Santa Clara University."
The Santa Clara board of trustees endorsed a report that provides the broad outlines of a plan to raise the visibility and competitive
stature of SCU's intercollegiate athletic program. Santa Clara recently extended
women's coach Jerry Smith
's contract for seven years.
The San Jose Earthquakes have been sharing Buck Shaw Stadium but will move into their new home
"With a deep commitment to educate the whole person, Santa Clara aims to provide outstanding coaching and facilities for our student-athletes," said Provost Dennis Jacobs
. "Santa Clara University aspires to reach the same level of excellence in intercollegiate athletics as it has achieved within its academic programs."
