Platini Withdraws Support for Blatter

UEFA President Michel Platini told L’Equipe on Thursday that he will no longer support Sepp Blatter after the Swiss went back on his word that he would step down as FIFA President at the end of his current term, which expires next year. Blatter is now saying that he will run for a fifth term as head of soccer’s world governing body.

“I am supporting him no longer, it’s finished,” Platini said. “I have known him for a long time, I like him, but I’m not favorable to him having another term. I supported him in 1998, but I do not support in 2014. And in the future, I shall not support Blatter. I told him that. I think FIFA needs a breath of fresh air.”

At FIFA’s Congress in Brazil on Wednesday, Blatter faced angry calls from European soccer leaders to stand down, something the 78-year-old described as “the most disrespectful thing I’ve ever experienced in my entire life.”

When asked why he chose to withdraw his support for Blatter, Platini said, “In 2011, he asked for [UEFA’s support] and told us that this was his last term.” Meanwhile, the Frenchman said he is considering standing against Blatter, promising to make a decision by the UEFA Champions League draw on Aug. 28.
