[U.S. OPEN CUP] Eric Wynalda
's magic touch in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
Two years ago, he led amateur Cal FC to the quarterfinals. This year, his Atlanta Silverbacks are in the final eight after a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids in
which the NASL club finished with eight players (against 10 for the hosts).
Two goals by Jaime Chavez
-- a former member of Cal FC -- gave Atlanta
a 2-0 lead before Dillon Powers
pulled one back for Colorado.
Chavez didn't finish the game as he was one of four players sent off, along with both
head coaches, Wynalda and Colorado's Pablo Mastroeni
, in an ugly incident in the second half. Atlanta's Kwadwo Poku
and Chavez and Colorado's Marc Burch
all saw red cards.Incident @50:40
-- For the third year in a row, the NASL's Carolina RailHawks eliminated the LA Galaxy from the Open Cup, winning, 1-0, on Daniel
's breakaway in overtime to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Galaxy started Robbie Keane
and Landon Donovan
played the last 64 minutes, so this was not a second-string squad it brought to Cary. The Galaxy, who had a 31-6 edge in shots, won the
tournament in 2001 and 2005 while reaching the final on two other occasions. It has lost to non-MLS competition five times in the history of the tournament.
-- Sebastien Le Toux
's second goal of the game, from the penalty spot, in the 115th minute gave the Philadelphia Union a 2-1 win over the New York Cosmos, who had beaten the New York Red
Bulls in the fourth round. First Round: Report Second Round: Report Third Round: Report Fourth Round: Report
