Union wins at New England in Curtin's league debut

[MLS: Week 16] A pair of goals from Frenchman Sebastien Le Toux and a rocket from Danny Cruz gave the Philadelphia Union a 3-1 win at the New England Revolution in interim manager Jim Curtin's first league game since taking over for John Hackworth.

The Union, who moved to within one point of the red zone in the Eastern Conference, has also won two games under Curtin in the U.S. Open Cup since taking the reins two weeks ago.

“I thought our team played good defensively from front to back,” Curtin said after the win, just the fourth in 17 games. “Our forwards defended well, our center backs did a good job, in fact our entire back line played great. I was happy with the performance.”

In a battle of the conference leaders at the World Cup break, Chad Barrett scored the first-half game-winner -- his third goal in the last four games -- as the Seattle Sounders extended their unbeaten streak to five games with a 1-0 win at D.C. United.

-- The annual Cali Clasico at Stanford Stadium drew 50,006 fans, who watched as the San Jose Earthquakes fell to the LA Galaxy, 1-0, on Gyasi Zardes' goal.

-- The goal of the day came from Erick Torres on a full volley of a Tony Lochhead's long pass to give Chivas USA a 1-0 win over Real Salt Lake.

-- The Columbus Crew's match against FC Dallas was postponed when an off-duty fire fighter was struck by lightning in the parking lot outside Columbus Crew Stadium. He was reported to be critical condition after being resuscitated. Inclement weather had delayed the match's start for an hour and a half.

FRIDAY. Just three days after losing to Portland in the U.S. Open Cup, Sporting Kansas City got revenge with a 1-0 win on Lawrence Olum's first-half goal.

The win moved Sporting KC into a tie for first place with D.C. United. The loss continued the Timbers' troubles at home, where they have just one win in 10 games.

Just four days after Australia played its last World Cup game, Tim Cahill was back in action for the New York Red Bulls, assisting on Bradley Wright-Phillips’ stoppage-time goal -- his league-high 12th goal of the season -- that earned them a 2-2 tie with Toronto FC at Red Bull Arena.
