Upon arriving at Seoul's Incheon Airport from its first-round World Cup exit in Brazil, the South Korean players politely lined up for a
photo only to have fans throw toffee at them – "go eat toffee" being a Korean insult.
The players, who managed only a point in the World Cup games, stood stoically as the candies
fell at their feet.
South Korea coach Hong Myunbg-bo
had issued an apology and took the blame for the poor performance:
“I am sorry that we
weren’t able to return the love and support shown by our people during the World Cup. It was due to my deficiency as a coach that we didn’t put up the desired results.”
But that did not ward of the Korean fans’ fury:
