Landon Donovan on Wednesday appeared on the NBC Sports Network show
The Dan Patrick Show, and was asked the awkward question of what he thinks of people who say they are glad the USA is
now finished at the World Cup.
The former USA captain said it was “clearly unpatriotic for sure,” adding: “I think -- you see more of those comments probably than I do --
but I think it’s kind of sad. I think you’re right. I think people are threatened by it. I’m not sure why, I think they need to look at themselves a little more closely and realize
that it’s good for everybody when our country comes together like this.”
The three-time World Cup veteran added: “I’ve never seen our country come together like that
— aside from after 9/11. You don’t see that. So seeing our whole country together and bonded and wanting our team to do well is incredible"
When asked if his international
career was over, the 32-year-old replied that he hadn’t made a decision yet.
