Atlanta and Carolina carry NASL flag into quarterfinals

[U.S. OPEN CUP] The Atlanta Silverbacks and Carolina RailHawks will look to make it three in a row over MLS opposition in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup when the NASL clubs play the Chicago Fire and FC Dallas, respectively, in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

The Silverbacks return home after winning at the Colorado Rapids, 2-1, in a match that saw three Silverbacks -- Jaime Chavez, who scored both goals, Kwadwo Poku and Borfor Carr -- red carded in the second half. Atlanta technical director Eric Wynalda and assistant Ricardo Montoya were also ejected.

Carolina is coming off wins over Chivas USA (on penalty kicks) and the LA Galaxy (1-0 on overtime). The RailHawks will need another big game from goalie Scott Goodwin, who had eight saves in the win over the Galaxy.

The Seattle Sounders, who are looking to tie the Fire for the MLS record with four Open Cup titles, host the archrival Portland Timbers Wednesday at Starfire Sports Complex, where they have never lost an Open Cup match.

Columbus, FC Dallas and New England, which plays at Philadelphia on Tuesday night, have won the Open Cup once.
