Dutch goalkeeper Jasper Cillesson
being replaced by backup Tim Krul
for the penalty shootout against
Costa Rica has become the most famous substitution of the World Cup. Netherlands coach Luis Van Gaal
decided that Krul would be the better keeper for the penalty kicks. And luckily
for Van Gaal, he made the right decision.
The Netherlands went on to win the shootout, 4-3, with Krul making two saves. Cillesson and Krul discussed the substitution, Cillesson said that
he was not aware that he was going to be replaced, and was ultimately disappointed, understandably wanting to be a part of the entire game. Krul knew he was going to sub in for Cillesson if it came to
penalties, and claimed that he had been watching the game in a different light.
