Colombia's Zuniga Escapes FIFA Punishment; Brazil's Silva Appeal Denied

FIFA’s disciplinary committee on Monday ruled that no retrospective action would be take on Colombia and Napoli defender Juan Zuniga for the tackle on Neymar that left the Brazil star with a fractured vertebra and ended his World Cup. In a statement, the world governing body said that its own rules prevented the case from being reopened because referee Carlos Velasco Carballo dealt with the incident on the field. While Carballo issued a foul for the late challenge, Zuniga did not receive a yellow card.

FIFA also said it would not consider Brazil's appeal against captain Thiago Silva after he received a yellow card that would keep him out of Tuesday's semifinal against Germany. The governing body said there was "no legal basis" to grant such a request. Silva was booked for blocking Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina as he was about to punt the ball. Since it was his second of the tournament he was automatically suspended.
